Are you planning to visit the northern part of Tenerife? Are you staying in Puerto de la Cruz or nearby and want to see more places? If yes, we have a perfect plan for your one day trip! This is the exact itinerary of our very first trip together, which is our favourite memory.
The first stop, driving from Puerto, is a beach called Playa de Castro. It is maximum 15 minutes drive. To reach it, park by the restaurant at the San Pedro viewpoint and follow the trail Rambla de Castro.
This little paradise with black sandy beach, palm trees and waterfalls is a hidden gem, not far from Puerto de la Cruz.
The easiest way to reach it, is walking from the viewpoint above, El Mirador de San Pedro, following the trail Rambla de Castro. Up there, you will find a restaurant and a parking lot. The way down is a little challenging (so don't forget to watch your steps while admiring the views, too) but it is definitely worth it. Also, be smarter than Eli on our first visit and don't wear flip flops! 😅
It is one of the places that we never miss during our Tenerife visits. 💙 We recommend to go when the tide is low, otherwise you might not be able to reach the sandy beach (which is then covered by the sea, see on the first picture) and walk to the the biggest waterfall.
If you are hungry, we recommend to stop at the gas station El Mirador on the TF-5 road for breakfast, snack or lunch. They offer a great variety of sandwiches, fries and spectacular views, too. And all that for good prices.
Charco de La Laja in San Juan de la Rambla is our next place to go on this trip. Charco is a name for natural pools, in Tenerife there are many of them. It is important, that you always check the tide and the wind, because the big waves coming from the sea can be dangerous.
Next on the way is Garachico. A little town, historically important and known as the first port of the whole island. The port was destroyed by a volcano explosion, and nowadays it is nice to walk around, but also swim.
Another food stop? Then we have a tip for you: Restaurante Mundial 82 in La Caleta de Interián, which offer local dishes including sea food.
Coming to the end of the day, there is a place not to miss when in Tenerife. For us, this is the most beautiful place on the island and we keep coming back. Punta de Teno - the most western point of the island and the best spot to watch the sunset. It has a unique atmosphere, as it is remote, just you (felling super small) and volcanic landscape, which gives the impression of being on Mars or another planet. You can see the famous Los Gigantes from here, the giant rock formations. This place is meant to slow down, chill and enjoy the moment.
The road to the lighthouse is closed for cars between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., so the only way to get there is either by bus during those times, or by car after 7pm. This is because the road is narrow and very high up on the cliff, so it would be dangerous with more traffic. We tried both options during our last visits - once in autumn by car and we took the bus once around Christmas because of the earlier sunset. In the summer, when the sun sets later, you'll still have plenty of time.
If you decide for the bus (line 369), you can park the car in Buenavista del Norte. Do not forget to take something to drink and some snacks, if you plan on staying longer, as there are no shops or restaurants, actually not a single building. And keep an eye on the time before heading back, as the bus runs once an hour and the last one leaves before 6:30 p.m. During the winter, the sun sets around 6 p.m. in Tenerife.
